You can’t trust anyone these days. I grew up believing a man’s word was his bond.
I guess that doesn’t apply in the business world.
Southwest Airlines is set to charge passengers to check luggage for the first time … six months after promising it wouldn’t.
I’ve flown Southwest almost exclusive for the simple reasoning that they go where I want to and I bought into their “Bags Fly Free” policy. There was a time where flying on Southwest was a bargain with low prices and lack of luggage fees. The bargains disappeared years ago. Now free bags are gone too.
Looks like I’m going to have to reconsider my options. If Southwest can’t be loyal to me, perhaps I shouldn’t be loyal to them.
Which brings me to their explanation for the new policy. They say it’s all about loyalty, but truth is it’s about money. Southwest said it was done to “deepen and reward loyalty” for its “most engaged customers.”
So it’s probably a coincidence that those who purchase their more expensive fares are exempt. Turns out that frequent flyers with “A-List Preferred” status will still get two bags, while A-List level members and Southwest credit card holders will get one free checked bag.
It turns out Southwest is no better than the legacy airlines. The “no frills” airline was created on the premise of getting people to their destination for a low price.
The airline eliminated it’s open seating last year where customers selected their seats after boarding. Now, in addition to allowing customers to pay for seats with extra legroom, they will also introduce a basic economy fare.
So, what do you think of the changes at Southwest Airlines? Will you remain loyal, or look elsewhere.
